Beautiful Mission, the 3rd we’ve visited on this trip. Hope to someday visit all 21! Please note that, if you visit on Sunday (as we did), mass is held at 7 and 10 am (no visitors until mass is over.
The mission is accessible, with wide paved ways. There is a cemetery on the grounds (1778). Beautiful gardens.

While I've lived in the San Gabriel Valley all my life, I finally made it to the SGV Mission, the first Mission in California, for Indigenous People's Day in October.

The Mission is impressive to see it and appreciate its history, sad as it may be. Lest we forget that the people who built this gem were enslaved Native Americans.

The Mission, the grounds and architecture were impressive. There are several benches around the property so one can sit out there and contemplate life, say a prayer, meditate, or even eat lunch.

The man at the gift shop/entrance was super informative and helpful. He greeted and welcomed us and provided us with all the information we needed. The mission itself was beautiful and a nice walkthrough to learn about the history behind it. Definitely worth a visit.

Out of the 21 Spanish missions in California, San Gabriel Arcángel is the fourth and is located south of Pasadena. Founded in 1771 by Father Junipero Serra, it is the closest to LA, where my partner and I came this Saturday afternoon. Upon arrival, there is a large parking lot that can fit hundreds of cars and buses. Entered through the gift shop, we paid for admission to the self-guided tour of the grounds and church. The layout is well organized, with plaques that can be viewed in an orderly sequence. The chapel is the star of the show and the oldest building south of Monterey. The pulpit is original, and the altar was brought from Mexico in the 1790s. Mass is still celebrated here. One of the distinct features of this mission is the bell wall at its side, which faces Mission Road. The facade is very simple and modest, and the oldest bells were cast in 1795. There is also a good museum behind the mission wall that does a good job of explaining the California missions and thoroughly integrating the experiences of Native Americans. One could easily spend a couple hours here and come away with a new appreciation for the role of missions in the development of the state, for which we can recommend this place.

The employees at the gift shop were helpful and friendly. I was glad to see the Mission repaired. Great memories visiting the Mission when I was younger. Also, thanks to those who care for the cemetery.
