Went here on a free museum day. A well kept part of California history. Great that the mansion was used as a girls orphanage for nearly 85 years. It was built by one of the richest person in America in those days and also a governor. It has clean restrooms, paid street side parking and can buy tickets onsite too. One thing I observed that the mansion in terms of elegance and luxury was not as good as others I saw in Oregon and Vancouer; bit surprising to me. No photography is allowed inside.

Must see! A free tour of a gorgeous mansion. Docent was very informed. Rooms were brought back to period with a lot of the original furnishings. Tour lasted about 45 minutes.

The tour was informative, and most importantly, NOT BORING! Tour guide Charles passionately took us back in time, with insights on details we had not heard on other Stanford-related tours. All that with a dash of humor where appropriate. I would recommend the tour to anyone interested in Sacramento, California, or even U.S. History 🙂

We attended the Halloween tour on Saturday evening. The mansion was decorated beautifully to match the spooky vibe. The tour started on time with the docent explaining the history of 150 years old mansion. Unfortunately, pictures and video are not allowed inside the beautiful mansion. The docent told spooky stories related to the mansion. The tour on the first floor started from the tea room then continued to the piano room, dining room, and final room with the wick coffin in it. All the rooms were decorated beautifully with light effects and skeletons posed accordingly. It wasn't too scary for us and the docent made some jokes to lightened up the mood. We only went to the orphan room on the 2nd floor and the docent shared some funny spooky story. The tour ended at the upstairs sun room. It lasted for about 15 minutes. I highly recommend to reserve the free tour.

Amazing mansion! Highly recommend our tour guide, Ryan. He was very knowledgeable and a great storyteller - the 1 hour tour flew by! The tours start every hour on the hour and they are free (max 15 people). You can only enter the mansion as part of a tour, and photos inside are prohibited. Definitely one of the best places in Sacramento!

Gorgeous state park. 5 stars to take special pictures. Make sure you check in at the front desk before you take pictures they have many do nots. We are responsible, respectful citizens and always respect property and people. However, the lady at the information desk was less than respectful. She spoke to me as if I had no common sense or we were there to be disrespectful and disrespect the property. She asked for me to read the policy and because I read it too fast she commented, “you obviously didn’t read it all” and continued to speak down to me. She then asked for my signature to sign in and because my signature wasn’t to here likings she commented, “that’s not a signature, it’s not legible”. Her smart and disrespectful comments were unnecessary and upsetting. Not only was she rude but she was also a hypocrite. She repeated herself multiple times saying, “be respectful to others that visit the park”, however she was the most disrespectful person in the park. We not only shared the space with other guests, but when we were told we could not have our tripod we removed it immediately. We also received many compliments from guests who asked to take pictures of my daughter and with her. It would have been a perfect day but the disrespectful and rude lady left a bitter taste with the experience. Hopefully someone is able to speak to her about her disrespectful comments and rude behavior.
